Mission

The mission of the Au Sable
Big Water Preservation Association is to conserve and watch over the reach of river from Mio Dam to Alcona Pond and support the best interests of the entire Au Sable River system.

Current Concerns

River clean-ups including providing dumpsters and service at landings as well as coordinating clean up activities throughout the season with other organizations.

Protecting the trout population through suitable stocking, law enforcement and fishing regulations.

Streamside restoration including erosion control and the placement of large woody debris.

Water quality including temperature, stream flow and purity.

Angler responsibility through proper catch and release, line recycling and restraint when conditions warrant.

Creel Census Starts on 4/25 - Please Help Clerks With Their Work Because It Will Help Us In Determining 2010 Regulations

DNR Fisheries Division to Conduct Creel Survey on Au Sable River Below Mio

As trout season approaches, the Department of Natural Resources wants
anglers who fish the Au Sable River from Mio to McKinley to know it will
be conducting a large-scale creel survey during the entire season.

Three creel clerks – two in watercraft and one on foot – will
conduct short interviews with anglers about their fishing success; if
the anglers have any fish in possession, they will ask to measure the
fish. The creel survey is designed to ascertain the catch rates and
harvest as fisheries biologists consider regulations that will maximize
the stream’s potential to produce large trout while allowing continued
harvest.

“We’ve tried to model what will happen under various management
scenarios, but we have to answer a couple of basic questions,” said
Dave Borgeson, Northern Lake Huron Fisheries Management Supervisor.
“Those questions are -- how much harvest is there with the current
regulations and are catch rates high enough to produce significant
hooking mortality?”

Creel clerks will be on the river from Mio to McKinley five days a
week, including all weekends and holidays, working random shifts, from
early morning to dark. They will attempt to conduct interviews as
quickly as possible with as little interference with anglers as they can
manage.

The stretch of the Au Sable below Mio is currently being managed with
experimental regulations; the DNR has made it a priority to simplify
regulations as much as possible. But proposed regulations changes for
the Mio-to-McKinley stretch have been contentious with no consensus
among angler groups.

DNR Fisheries personnel hope to gather enough information to propose
new regulations by next season.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use
and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future
generations.

Take The
70 Degree Pledge

When the morning temperature at Mio Dam is 70 degrees or more then I will not fish for trout on that stretch of the Au Sable River, Mio to Alcona Pond.  If I choose to fish that day, it will be on other streams with cooler water, further downstream for warm water fish such as smallmouth bass, or on the many lakes in the area.  If I catch a trout I will let it go immediately.  When the temperatures fall below 70 degrees at Mio Dam I may consider fishing the stretch again, but will do it early in the morning, at twilight, and at night.  I will use a thermometer to fish runs with cooler water so the trout have a better chance at surviving catch and release.  I recognize that this is a necessary practice during the hottest part of the summer, late June through mid August, and I am helping the fishery when I do it.
