FEBRUARY 2ND ANNUAL MEETING

Among northern Michigan’s great natural assets is a top-notch fishery that brings people to this region from all over the country.  With that in mind, Huron Pines is pleased to announce that the keynote speaker at their Annual Meeting this year is Dr. Kelley Smith, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Fisheries Division Chief.

The Huron Pines Annual Meeting is a great opportunity for community leaders, conservationists, and other interested citizens with a passion for natural resources to share ideas and learn more about conservation issues.

This year’s event is Saturday, February 2nd in Hillman at the K of C Hall from 9:30am to 1:30pm.

Seating is limited and reservations are required.  The program includes lunch and is free to members; there is a $10 charge for non-members.  Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis and are needed by January 25th.

In addition to inviting the public to the meeting, the Huron Pines Board and staff would also like to extend their thanks to the many partners and supporters that have made 2007 a success.

 To register, please email jill@huronpines.org or call (989) 344-0753 x 12.

DEQ INITIATES PUBLIC REVIEW FOR UPCOMING PROGRAM

The Department of Environmental Quality has released the draft Nonpoint Source Program Plan Update for public comment.  We encourage groups to take the time to review the document and send comments to the DEQ.  It is very important the DEQ receives input representative of Northern Michigan concerns regarding management and prioritization of Nonpoint Source Pollution.

The document is available at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/deq/wb-nps-program-plan_218845_7.pdf and the DEQ will be taking comments until February 8, 2008.

VOLUNTEER WITH HURON PINES

Huron Pines is beginning to plan some great spring projects.  Some of our plans include landscape restoration, river restoration, and many other volunteer opportunities.  As always, we appreciate the help of people or groups that have talents within the scope of our projects.  We also know that without the assistance from volunteers, our projects wouldn’t be as successful as they are and the 2008 field season will be no different.  We have several amazing opportunities for individuals and groups that will be beneficial for everyone involved- especially our region’s natural resources!

UPDATED LINKS PAGE WITH MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS

In order to make our website more helpful, Huron Pines has a new and improved Links page.  It includes links to our Major Contributors, Non-profit Organizations, Conservation Districts, and useful Government websites.  There is additional information listed under each Major Contributor, which includes mission statements and how donors have helped particular Huron Pines projects.  Check it out!
