CONCERNED CITIZENS PARTICIPATE IN WATERSHED PLANNING

On Saturday, February 23rd, 2008, Huron Pines officially launched the North Branch Au Sable River Watershed Plan by holding an open house stakeholder meeting.  Watershed management is an ongoing effort aimed at restoring, maintaining, and enhancing water quality. Proper management seeks to minimize the impact to water resources through the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs), land protection, community planning, and education.

Funding for the project has been provided by the North Branch Au Sable River Association.

3 JOB OPPORTUNITIES WITH HURON PINES

The Muskegon River system offers some of Michigan’s most diverse angling opportunities and we have 3 positions open which will involve improving the fishery.

Huron Pines is working with the Department of Natural Resources to hire 3 creel clerks. The seasonal employees will conduct interviews at access sites and boat launching ramps on the Upper Muskegon River. The job will entail making counts of boats or anglers engaged in fishing and identifying anglers’ catch as to species of fish or other pertinent information to help guide future management efforts. The positions run from April 2008 to October 2008.

If you know someone who is interested in applying for a creel clerk position or would like to learn more about this project, check out our website at: http://www.huronpines.org/project.php?action=view&projectId=78

A BOOST FOR FISHERIES HABITAT

Inland Fisheries will receive much needed support from the Department of Natural Resources this spring. The DNR is currently accepting applications for the 2008 and 2009 Inland Fisheries Grant program, which offer grants ranging from $5,000 to $200,000 for local projects that enhance the state’s aquatic resources.  The primary focus of the program is the Management of Dams. Therefore, projects will only be considered if they mitigate the impacts on a fishery caused by the operation of a dam.

The deadline for applications is March 31st, 2008.
